Windows XP does have a built-in CD burner utility. Unfortunately, it does not burn DVDs or any type of high-definition media. Of course, there are several paid burners you could buy, like the popular Nero 8 Ultra for $80.00. However, there are a couple of good alternatives which are free and do not come with spyware or other malicious components.
CDBurnerXP is a free application that burns CDs, DVDs (including HD-DVD and Blu-Ray). In addition, CDBurnerXP can create ISO files. This feature allows you to copy and burn a copy of any disk on your hard drive. I’ve come across many people on forums looking for such a free tool. CDBurnerXP 4.0.024.439 is now available and includes a couple of nice additions as well as some bug fixes. I haven’t tested this utility myself because I do not have Windows XP, but I did do some research to find out what the actual users are saying about it.
Update: CDBurnerXP now supports Windows Vista.
- This free DVD burner is small at only 3mb.
- This interface is is clean and looks professional.
- Bug fixes allow DVDs to be viewed on your television and not just on your PC.
- According to the creators, CDBurnerXP runs on any Windows OS including Vista (even X64).
Overall, users seem vary pleased with the software. Some even say it’s better than Nero. Only minor glitches are reported and are usually solved with a re-install or driver updates. True geeks can also take advantage of the advanced features.
ImgBurn is another free DVD burning application. Reviews of ImgBurn are also very high with most users stating that it is light on recourses and simple to use. Yet another reason Not to buy Nero. Any users of these programs, please list your experience with these applications.
